It may sound like a silly question, but it is actually an excellent measure of your properties' predisposition to house a geothermal heat pump.

In Maryland, geothermal heat pumps are installed using a vertical loop, which requires a large drill to access your back yard to create boreholes.

Installing Vertical Loops in Your Backyard

Vertical loops are used when space is limited. Holes are bored using a drilling rig, and a pair of pipes with special u-bend fittings is inserted into the holes. A typical home requires three to five bores with about a 15-foot separation between the holes.

Steps to Install the Geothermal Heat Pump

Step 1: Site Preparation

Step 4: Install the Distribution System

Depending on your existing heating and cooling setup, you may need to modify or install new ductwork or radiant floor heating.

Step 2: Install the Ground Loop

Boreholes are drilled deep into the ground (usually 300 to 400 feet). The ground loop piping is inserted into these boreholes and grouted to ensure proper heat transfer. The boreholes are then sealed.

Step 5: Electrical Connections

The geothermal heat pump requires electrical power to operate.

Step 3: Install the Heat Pump

Once the ground loop is in place, the geothermal heat pump is installed indoors, typically in a basement or utility room.

Step 6: System Testing

After installation, it’s crucial to conduct thorough testing to ensure that everything is functioning correctly.
